Vehicle Maintenance Schedule

Car maintenance is key to preserving your vehicle. Here are some guidelines for knowing when it’s time to take your ride in for certain upkeep items.

Regular Maintenance

There are several consistent maintenance items to complete a throughout the year. For instance, you should typically get an oil change every 3,000 miles or three months — though some cars may only need it every 5,000 miles or five months. Oil lubricates the engine and its components, so it’s important that it stays clear. Other regular service includes brake inspections, tire rotations, wiper replacement, and fluid top- offs.

Before 30,000 Miles

There are two major things you should do before your car reaches the 30,000-mile mark. First, change the air filter. You probably don’t need to replace the air filter as often as the oil filter, but you should definitely inspect it to make sure it’s not clogged. Many places suggest replacing the air filter every 30,000 miles to prevent poor air circulation. Second, replace the fuel filter. Just like the air filter, the fuel filter can get clogged.

Before 60,000 Miles

You’ll also want to complete certain upkeep items by the 60,000-mile mark. First, check and replace the battery. Most people drive 60,000 miles in five years, so the battery usually needs to be replaced at this point, if you’ve not replaced I already. Second, replace the brake fluid if your brake pedal starts to feel soft, and replace the pads. Most cars need new rotors around his mile mark, as well. We also suggest flushing the coolant and transmission fluid, because it starts to degrade after a few years of driving.

Before 90,000 Miles

The 90,000-mile mark is associated with more major service tasks. You should check and replace the hoses that carry coolant, brake fluid, and power-steering fluid if necessary. Check and replace power-steering fluid, and have your mechanic replace the spark plugs. Finally, replace the timing belt if your car has one, to prevent major performance issues.
